Breath

How important is your breath?
The practice of deep breathing stimulates our parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), responsible for activities that occur when our body is at rest. It functions in an opposite manner to the sympathetic nervous system, which stimulates activities associated with the fight-or-flight response.
Of all the automatic functions of the body — cardiovascular, digestive, hormonal, glandular, immune — only the breath can be easily controlled voluntarily, explain Richard P. Brown, M.D. and Patricia L. Gerbarg, M.D. in their book, “The Healing Power of the Breath.” They write:
By voluntarily changing the rate, depth, and pattern of breathing, we can change the messages being sent from the body’s respiratory system to the brain. In this way, breathing techniques provide a portal to the autonomic communication network through which we can, by changing our breathing patterns, send specific messages to the brain using the language of the body, a language the brain understands and to which it responds. Messages from the respiratory system have rapid, powerful effects on major brain centers involved in thought, emotion, and behavior.
From an energy perspective, the breath is known to be very healing. It helps to release toxins in the body, including emotions and memories. If you breathe, you can heal. Using the breath is a cornerstone aspect of Jin Shin Jyutsu, helping the body to let go, and by helping the body relax and relax.
Here are a few methods from By Therese J. Borchard , Associate Editor from the World Of Psychology:
Coherent Breathing
Coherent breathing is basically breathing at a rate of five breaths per minute, which is the middle of the resonant breathing rate range. I achieve this if I count to five inhaling and count to five exhaling. The five-minute rate maximizes the heart rate variability (HRV), a measurement of how well the parasympathetic nervous system is working. Brown and Gerbarg explain that changing our rate and pattern of breath alters the HRV, which causes shifts in our nervous system. The higher the HRV the better because a higher HRV is associated with a healthier cardiovascular system and a stronger stress-response system. Breathing at a rate that is close to one’s ideal resonant rate (around five breaths per minute) can induce up to a tenfold improvement in HRV.
Resistance Breathing
Resistance breathing is exactly what its name suggests: breathing that creates resistance to the flow of air. Per the authors:
Resistance can be created by pursing the lips, placing the tip of the tongue against the inside of the upper teeth, hissing through the clenched teeth, tightening the throat muscles, partly closing the glottis, narrowing the space between the vocal cords, or using an external object such as breathing through a straw. All that sounds a bit complicated to me. Breathing should be easy, right? So I simply breathe out of my nose, which, according to Brown and Gerbarg, creates more resistance than breathing through the mouth. I do think it’s interesting when they explain that singing and chanting – all musical sounds created by contracting vocal cords — are forms of resistance breathing, and that is why they provide that relaxed sensation you can get meditating (if you can meditate).
Breath Moving
Breath moving is when the breath moves courtesy of your imagination. Brown compares this exercise to an internal massage. I’m not sure I’d go that far. I like the real deal. However, I do think sending your breath on a little journey around your body – as long as it doesn’t get too lost — does help you keep your concentration on the exercise and not on your to-do list because counting to five can get a little old. For example, here’s part of a circuit the authors offer in their book:
As you breathe in, imagine you are moving your breath to the top of your head.
As you breathe out, imagine you are moving your breath to the base of your spine, your perineum, your sit bones.
Each time you breathe in, move the breath to the top of the head.
Each time you breathe out, move the breath to the base of the spine.
Breathe in this circuit for ten cycles.

Miso Soup: Cure for the Common Cold?
Did you know that Miso Soup with Scallions is actually an ancient Chinese herbal remedy for colds?  In 300 AD famous herbalist, Ge Hong, wrote about Miso Soup with Scallions in a book called, Bei ji zhou hou fang or Emergency Formulas to Keep Up One’s Sleeve.
This soup is indicated for the onset of a cold when a person is just beginning to feel a headache, stuffy nose and a slight fever.  So, the next time you feel a cold coming on, be sure to have your miso!  Here is the simple recipe for Miso Soup that Serves 4:
Ingredients:
6 cups water
3-4 Tablespoons Aka Miso or red soy bean paste (usually sold in the refrigerated section)
3-5 green onions stalks, chopped
Directions:
* Dissolve the miso in a little bit of boiling water (about 2 tsp.)
* Bring water to a boil in a saucepan and add the miso & scallions.
* Simmer for 5-10 minutes.
* Remove from heat top with green onions and serve.
Variations: Add other ingredients to make a more substantial soup, such as tofu, fresh mushrooms, cooked shrimp, snow pea sprouts, cooked rice noodles or paper-thin slices of fresh ginger.

Hand and fingersJST

Just a note: this is Jin Shin Jyutsu and doesn't really correlate to the meridians flows thru the fingers and how we use them in EEM. I think JSJ works with the radiant circuits which form before the meridians. JSJ suggests holding these fingers separately (both sides for balance) to help with the associated emotion on their chart.

For instance, in EEM, we relate the thumb to Lung meridian (not the ring finger as shown on the JSJ chart you shared) which flows thru it and the emotion of grief. The ring finger has TW running thru it - relating to anxiety and hysteria. Worry is associated with the Stomach meridian and digestion but Stomach doesn't flow thru the fingers.

JSJ is great - just don't want people to become confused as this page is devoted to Eden Energy Medicine.

Sleep

se the Meridian Flow Wheel to improve your sleep in other ways too.  For example, if you are waking between 1-3am which is Liver’s peak time, you can Sedate Liver by tracing the Liver Meridian backwards several times during this time.  You could also hold Liver Sedating Points prior to falling asleep.
If you consistently awaken between 3-5 a.m. needing to urinate, you might look to Lung’s opposite partner Bladder which is at its lowest energy level creating difficulty for the Bladder to hold the urine until morning.  Sedating Bladder Meridian before bed or between 3-5am would be helpful.  However, if you are waking between 3-5 a.m. due to cough or asthmatic response, then you need to look at Sedating the Lung Meridian which has become over active during its peak time.  For more information on Acupressure Strengthening and Sedating Points a Chart and DVD are available.

The Basic Nutrient Plan
Everyone reading this blog should get on the basic plan of supplements and stay on them for life. Even if you are “cured” of diabesity, you will need to keep taking them, because you need special vitamins, minerals, and herbs to help compensate for your genetic tendency toward insulin resistance.
Let’s take a few moments to review the specifics about each of these supplements or ingredients to understand why they are so important in the treatment of diabesity.
High-Quality, High-Potency, Complete Multivitamin
The right multivitamin will contain all the basic vitamins and minerals. Keep in mind that getting the optimal doses usually requires 2 to 6 capsules or tablets a day. Some people may have unique requirements for much higher doses that need to be prescribed by a trained nutritional or functional medicine physician.
Note that B complex vitamins are especially important for those with diabesity, as they help protect against diabetic neuropathy, or nerve damage, and improve metabolism and mitochondrial function. Antioxidants such as vitamin E, C, and selenium are also important as they may help reduce oxidative stress, which is a significant cause of diabesity.
Vitamin D3
The vitamin D deficiency is epidemic, with up to 80 percent of modern day humans are deficient or suboptimal in their intake and blood levels. Depending on what’s in your multivitamin, I recommend taking additional vitamin D. Vitamin D3 improves metabolism by influencing more than 200 different genes that can prevent and treat diabetes4and metabolic syndrome5.
There are several important things to keep in mind when taking vitamin D:
  1. Take the right type of vitamin D— D3 (cholecalciferol), not D2. Most doctors prescribe vitamin D2. Do not take prescription vitamin D; it is not as effective and not very biologically active.
  2. For serious deficiencies, you may need more vitamin D, as much as 5,000 to 10,000 IU a day for 3 months or more. Do this with your doctor’s supervision, if needed.
  3. Monitor your vitamin D status with your doctor. Get your blood level to 45 to 60 ng/dl. Be sure to request the right blood test, which is the Vitamin D 25 Blood test to accurately check vitamin D levels.
  4. Give time to fill up your tank. It can take 6 to 12 months for some people. The average daily dose for maintenance for most people is 1,000 to 2,000 IU a day.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids (EPA and DHA)
These important fats improve insulin sensitivity, lower cholesterol by lowering triglycerides and raising HDL, reduce inflammation, prevent blood clots, and lower the risk of heart attacks6. Fish oil also improves nerve function and may help prevent the nerve damage common in diabetes7.
Magnesium
Diets low in magnesium are associated with increased insulin levels, and magnesium deficiency is common in diabetics. Magnesium helps glucose enter the cells and turn those calories into energy for your body.
Some people with severe magnesium deficiency may need more than the amount outlined below  If you are concerned you may be severely deficient, discuss the details with your doctor.
Diarrhea is often a sign that you are getting too much magnesium. If this occurs, just back off on the dose, and avoid magnesium carbonate, sulfate, gluconate, or oxide. They are the cheapest and most common forms found in supplements but are poorly absorbed. Switch to magnesium glycinate. If you tend to be constipated, use magnesium citrate.
People with kidney disease or severe heart disease should take magnesium only under a doctor’s supervision.
Alpha Lipoic Acid
Alpha lipoic acid is a powerful antioxidant and mitochondrial booster shown to reduce blood sugar and heal a toxic liver. It may also be useful in preventing diabetic nerve damage and neuropathy. It can improve the clearance of glucosefrom the blood by 50 percent8.
Chromium and Biotin
Chromium is very important for proper sugar metabolism and insulin sensitivity, and can help you make more insulin receptors9. Biotin has been shown to enhance insulin sensitivity, lower triglycerides, reduce expression of cholesterol-producing genes, and improve glucose metabolism10.
Herbs
A number of herbs, including cinnamon11 and catechins from green tea12, are helpful in controlling blood sugar and improving insulin sensitivity. Green tea can even increase fat burning and metabolism. The best products provide combinations of herbs in one supplement.
PGX (Polyglycoplex)
PGX is a very viscous fiber from a Japanese tuber or root combined with seaweeds into a super fiber. It has profound effects on insulin, glucose, and hemoglobin A1c13.
PGX reduces the absorption of sugars and fats into your bloodstream and helps control appetite, weight loss, blood sugar, and cholesterol14.
When taken before meals with a glass of water, it can be a critical component to overcoming diabesity. It can lower your insulin response after a meal by 50 percent, while lowering LDL cholesterol by 20 percent and blood sugar by 23 percent. I have had patients lose up to 40 pounds just by using this super fiber.
Protein Powder for your Shakes
I strongly encourage the use of a high-quality, hypoallergenic rice, pea, hemp, chia, or soy protein powder. Some of these powders are anti-inflammatory and support detoxification. Soy protein from whole soy foods with isoflavones can lower blood sugar15 and cholesterol16.
A protein shake also makes an excellent breakfast and snack option, helping balance your blood sugar and heal your liver. See here for great shake recipes (and some other easy breakfast ideas).
My Basic Nutrient Plan
Now that you understand what these vitamins and nutrients do for your body,  you might be wondering what your daily regimen should be. Below, I provide an overview of what I suggest for basic supplementation for my patients.  All of the supplements should be taken with a meal, such as breakfast and dinner; PGX fiber should be taken before meals, as directed. Click on the links to purchase top-quality versions of these supplements in my store.
  1. A high-quality multivitamin and mineral – you can find an array of multivitamins at my store. This is the one I frequently recommend, especially if you have any degree of diabesity. To find out the degree of diabesity you have, log in and take this
  2. 1,000 to 2,000 IU of vitamin D3,once a day with breakfast – you can get this as a liquid or
  3. 1,000 to 2,000 mg of omega-3 fats (should contain a ratio of approximately 300/200 mg of EPA/ DHA), twice a day, once with breakfast and once with dinner
  4. 100 to 200 mg of magnesium, twice a day, once with breakfast and once with dinner – you can find several forms in my store, including citrate and glycinate.
  5. 300 to 600 mg of alpha lipoic acid twice a day, once with breakfast and once with dinner. Note the multi I recommended above contains 600 mg of alpha lipoic acid.
  6. 200 to 600 mcg of chromium, once a day (up to 1,200 mcg a day can be helpful). The multi I recommended above contains 500 mcg of chromium
  7. 1 to 2 mg of biotin, twice a day, once with breakfast and once with dinner The multi I recommended above has 4 mg of biotin.
  8. 125 to 250 mg of cinnamon, twice a day, once with breakfast and once with dinner
  9. 25 to 50 mg of green tea catechins, twice a day, once with breakfast and once with dinner
  10. 5 grams of PGX, three times a day, 15 minutes before each meal with 8 ounces of water
  11. (Optional) A hypoallergenic protein powder to add to a morning protein shake. 1 to 2 scoops of rice, soy, hemp, pea, or chia protein powder for breakfast. Follow the directions on the label. This can be added to your UltraShake.
In addition to these, most people should use high-quality probiotics, but this is optional.
Many of the components listed can be obtained by taking combination supplements. Getting these ingredients in the listed dosage ranges is important. So be sure to look for combination supplements that match my recommendations as closely as possible.  And to make it even simpler for you, I have sourced the best brands I could find to create supplement kits so you can get all you need in one click –follow the links to learn more about my Blood Sugar Solution Basic Plan Supplement Kits – Option 1 and Option 2.
Conclusion
I hope this blog provides you a better understanding about supplements and choosing the right formula for your needs. While many people do very well with this basic program, more advanced conditions require additional supplements. I highly recommend talking with an integrative nutritionist or physician to address your unique needs.  http://drhyman.com/blog/2015/04/02/do-you-need-supplements/

allergies

It’s spring again, and  the trees are exploding! Although beautiful to look at, the pollen from these trees can cause a lot of problems in people with seasonal allergies.
I will show you 5 things you can do now to alleviate seasonal allergy symptoms. But first, I want to tell you a little bit about how we view allergies in Chinese medicine.
An allergy is a hypersensitive reaction to a particular substance, often tree pollen, grasses, weeds, dust mites, pet dander, etc. The symptoms vary from one person to the next, but commonly include itchy, red, watery eyes, sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion, dry cough, headaches, and fatigue.
The common medications taken for allergies can often make someone feel even worse (headaches, fatigue) and only address symptoms, not the root cause.
And what is the root cause?
Allergy symptoms arise due to an immune system imbalance. The imbalance can be exacerbated by stress, lack of sleep, and poor nutrition.
Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine are great ways to treat both the symptoms of seasonal allergies as well as the underlying cause. The best time to start treatments is BEFORE the arrival of spring, but you can still get plenty of benefit if you start when symptoms manifest, if you also make changes at home.

Treating the symptoms

Acupuncture uses a combination of local points in the head and “distal” points (points in the hands and feet) to help stuck energy flow through the body. (Read my e-book about how acupuncture works beyond the standard “qi” explanation)
I have worked with patients who have experienced immediate clearing of the nasal passages during a treatment, but we always address the root cause as well.

Treating the Root

It is equally important to treat the underlying cause. This is why acupuncturists do a complete assessment to arrive at a diagnosis (explained in Chinese medical terms) to treat the individual. In this way the body is able to heal itself, because “balance” is restored. Another word for balance is homeostasis.
Even though we are treating “allergies” per se, an acupuncturist can see that imbalances are highly individualized. Your allergies may not be caused by the same imbalances as your friend’s.
Chinese medicine does a wonderful job in treating individual people in their own individual environments. For example, chronic sinus congestion may be a recurring problem for those who have previously taken antibiotics. It can also manifest in those with a “damp” constitution. Dampness is described as a fixed and heavy obstruction which can reside at the physical, mental, or functional level, and I could write another entire blog (or book) about it. Living in a damp environment such as a humid climate or a damp basement may also contribute.
It is very possible that someone may simply not have enough energy to allow “clear yang” to reside in the head, which can also contribute to all the symptoms of allergies that are experienced from the neck up.
Dryness can also cause problems. Here in Colorado it is also common to experience nasal congestion because of our dry climate. People suffering from sinus congestion due to dryness often do well with humidifiers and neti pots.

Acupuncture takes all this into consideration.

Sometimes, a combination of herbal medicine and acupuncture is the best way to go to help someone clear symptoms and prevent further symptoms from arising. A good acupuncturist will also give nutritional advice. This is VERY important. Without a proper diet, weekly treatments will not produce results.
Acupuncture alone cannot counteract a poor diet composed of processed foods, sugar, and a heavy amount of dairy products.

Here are 5 things you can do right now:

1. Avoid sugar, processed foods, and dairy. These foods can create a lot of “dampness” in the body. In the spring, it is best to eat lighter, more “cleansing” foods. (Think GREEN foods, like spring lettuce, spinach, kale, etc)
2. Use a neti pot to help keep nasal passages clear.
3. Eat local honey. This may help your body recognize local pollens, so that your body does not see it as a foreign invader to react against in the future.
4.Try acupressure points. Massage your forehead, around the nose, around the inner ankle bone, and the inside of your shin from the ankle bone to the knee.
5. Acupuncture, of course!

ESTHER COHEN GUEST CONTRIBUTOR

Passover is a holiday with thousands and thousands of Haggadah possibilities. People have written them in many languages. There are actually Haggadah museums. Matthew Septimus and I celebrate, each year, with a poem, and a picture.
For Passover this year
I’d like to invite
people I love, some
I like well enough
some who are in the OK category
to picture a word where we all
in the course of the meal
say that it is possible
to forgive whatever happened to us:
betrayals, lies, even
annihilation. Some of life
so terrible it’s hard to believe
what people can do to one another
difference makes us crazy
how could he why did she
different values religions ideas
close family friend for 30 years
he didn’t invite us to his wedding
my husband’s Armenian relatives
all killed by Turks. Hurt is not
an abstraction an idea. There is
always a reason why, an
unsatisfactory explanation.
Weakness insanity priorities even
personality. This Passover
maybe we can
liberate ourselves
from holding onto
what happened before
we don’t have to subscribe
to Be Here Now but we can try
letting go of all that gets in the way
of how Pink Egypt is
how much we can love one another
this Passover we will pass over
injustice because we want to try
a holiday experiment
maybe just this year, we can liberate ourselves
by saying these words out loud
Forgive
Forgive
Forgive

hmm, it occurs to me  forgive you/him/her, forgive them, forgive myself...
